AbstractLarge dam removal is being used to restore river systems but questions remain regarding their outcomes. We examine how the removal of two large dams in the Elwha River, coupled with hatchery production and harvest restrictions, affect the population attributes of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and steelhead (O. mykiss) in the Elwha River. Initial response to dam removal by Chinook salmon and steelhead was an increase in the number of returning adults and their watershed distribution over the pre-removal run size and area. Hatchery production and harvest restrictions have helped to increase Elwha Chinook salmon and winter steelhead abundance, particularly during dam removal. Naturally produced juvenile Chinook salmon and steelhead outmigrant abundance increased three years after adult passage was restored, suggesting that short-term impacts due to downstream sedimentation during and immediately after dam removal were short-lived.
