This projects objective is to increase and restore summer chum and Puget Sound Chinook habitat within the Skokomish Indian Reservation. Phase 1 removes impenetrable barriers to fish passage in a historic river meander bend, reconnects oxbow ponds to the Skokomish River installs large organic debris, removes invasive plant species and revegetates with native plants. The expected result will be restoration of approximately 3/4 mile of spawning, overwintering, and summer rearing habitat for multiple salmon species. Phase 2 installs an engineered log jam at the head of the project. Multiple Skokomish based environmental assessments have addressed the basins lack of off-channel areas. The Tribe has discussed this projects potential, and high likelihood for success with staff from federal, state and local agencies. Phase 1 will take place after June 15th, 1999. Phase 2 will take place after August 15th. Anticipated completion for both phases should be by September 30th, 1999.
