The objective of the Elk Creek project is to restore about 1.2 miles of spawning habitat for salmonids. Salmon and Steelhead Limiting Factors in the Willapa Basin identifies loss of spawning habitat and LWD in the Willapa River watershed, which this project addresses. Our strategy this round was to focus on small streams where adequate data, willing landowners, and citizen support could be obtained. Focusing on streams near estuaring projects help utilize and enhance the salmon capability. The unique feature of this stream is the large existing estuary at the mouth of the stream; however, loss of spawning habitat fails to take advantage of this excellent rearing habitat. By connecting these two (2) important elements, the project will restore spawning habitat for salmon recovery. Control structures for stream pool and riffle creation will be installed. The LWD will be installed using the engineered method. Riparian zone will be improved and fencing will be provided for livestock exclusion. Salmon have been observed using the stream, thus access at the lower end is not an issue. This project will be a partnership with landowners, WBFEG, and the South Bend School District, who will do monitoring, maintenance, reporting, public outreach, and education. The area was logged about 10 years ago; the area is stable now with very limited road access and no activity is expected for about 30 years. All landowners along the creek are very supportive of the project.
