The project will consist of removing a dam and adjacent dilapidated fish ladder structure on Flett Creek, a tributary to Chamber Creek (WRIA 12) in the city of Lakewood. The stream has down cut below the dam rendering the existing fish passage structure impassable to salmon. The fish ladder has also undermined and become unstable. The project will remove the dam and fish ladder, then re-grade the stream back to its original slope. This project will eliminate the last fish passage barrier in the Flett Creek drainage, insuring unimpeded access for chum salmon, coho salmon, and cutthroat inhabiting the stream. There is approximately 2 miles of habitat above the dam. Project partners include the City of Lakewood (providing a 20% funding match), South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group, and Puyallup Tribe. The construction schedule for this project will be summer of 2000.
