The project reconfigures and naturalizes ½ mi. of ditched stream channel on Chimacum Cr. At RM 5.75 - 6.25; replaces a culvert with an inexpensive bridge; and revegetates 15 acres of riparian zone, establishes shade cover and controls invasive weeks upstream and adjacent to a previous project. Excavation of stream bank and placement of LWD such as root wads and anchored logs creates pools and riffles, deflects current and creates back eddies, side channels to establish natural flow dynamics. Logs and rock weirs will control grade as necessary in the project area. The project objective is long term improvement to the overall stream conditions in the watershed, reducing sedimentation, increasing dissolved oxygen and reducing nutrient loading effecting summer chum spawning grounds downstream while improving rearing and spawning habitat for coho, cutthroat and steelhead. A box culvert on the shared access driveway will be replaced with a rail car bridge removing a flow construction. Engineering, design and post construction monitoring are included. Ongoing monitoring in the watershed addresses project objectives of restoration of stream dynamics, water quality, fish presence and plant survival. Monitoring through 2005 includes partnerships with Jefferson County Conservation District, Wild Olympic Salmon, Trout Unlimited and Chimacum Schools. Permitting, design and construction begin in 2000, construction in summer 2001; planting in 2002, maintenance through 2003.
