Description

This project is located at 9112 Old Hwy 99, Olympia, Washington, Section 13, Township 17N and Range 2W. The project is on the Deschutes River RM 8. This project involves constructing 3 engineered logjams along 1500 feet of eroding streambank. The structures will be imbedded deeply into the bank to increase channel complexity and provide temporary, limited protection of the streambank. The period of protection will allow for establishment of native conifers and shrubs within a 125 to 350 foot buffer along the riparian corridor. Objectives of this project are to provide habitat diversity to the Deschutes System, to reduce erosion and the deposit of fine sediments over spawning gravels and to reestablish native vegetation along the riparian zone that will offer roughness to the floodplain, ensure future stream diversity and shade the river helping to lower summer water temperatures. These objectives will benefit cutthroat, coho and steelhead by improving the quality and quantity of spawning rearing and resting habitat. Estimated time for project completion is one and a half years with project monitoring continuing for a five year period. Project design and engineering is complete. Project permits should be ready by March 31, 2000 and construction is scheduled for the summer of 2000. Buffer planting is scheduled for late fall of year 2000. Monitoring will be conducted in years 1, 3 and 5. Project partners will include the Stream Team and WCC.
