Objective: Optimize introduction of Steelhead/Coho in waters disturbed by Mt. St. Helens activity of 1980 by reconstructing fish passageway on Brownell Cr. A new fish ladder will be installed and a new intake screen that will enable natural spawning in upper creek. Scope: (1) Remove land slide, replace intake screen & fish ladder at Brownell Cr. opening 5 miles of natural spawning and rearing habitat. Site History: The project is on WEYCO land 4 mi from confluence with N.F. Toutle. Site ceded to WDF&W in 1981 for restoration of Salmonid populations decimated by 1980 eruption. Since, 125 members of Cowlitz Game & Anglers have successfully operated & maintained the site on 100% volunteer basis resulting in significant restoration of the fishery & successful spawning area. The aging passageway at Brownell Cr. has caused observed kills of adult migrating natural Steelhead/Coho and observed kills of out migrating natural smolts. Expected Results: Long term rebuilding natural Steelhead and coho stocks.
