Description

Objectives: 1. provide training and support to teachers throughout the county so they understand elements of riparian habitat and implement their own stream restoration projects, 2. provide students with classroom and field-based opportunities to foster appreciation for the riparian ecosystem and stream resotration activities, 3. restore 15 riparian sites (approx. 2500 linear feet of county streams) on lowland Whatcom County stream through re-establishment of native riparian vegetation. The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (N-SEA) plans to recruit 40 teachers of 3rd through 8th grades to participate in the Students for Salmon 2001-2002 school year program. Teachers and classes will be from Whatcom Countys seven public school districts, the Lummi Tribal School, 2-4 private schools, and one home-school group. N-SEA will hold teacher training workshops, give presentations in each classroom, and work teachers and students to familiarize them with making environmental/field measurements such as water quality, pH, water temperature, native plant abundance, stream assessment, and existence of macroinvertebrates. N-SEA will also help to organize and plan restoration projects. At the programs end, both teachers and students will evaluate the program so N-SEA can retain what worked, and modify those items that did not. The project has been submitted to this inventory by USEPA with the permission of NOAA.
