The goals are to improve salmon spawning habitat by replacing detrimental invasive alder and non-native streamside vegetation with suitable native conifers (40,000 3-year-old Douglas Fir) while building a base of community support and participation for watershed protection and restoration by involving young people in all aspects of restoration, and by informing watershed residents about the limitations of this resource and its protection. Forty thousand 3-year-old Douglas Fir trees will be planted streamside within the Dungeness watershed to reduce sedimentation and nitrogen loading in salmon spawning beds, shade and cool the water, and later provide a source for LWD. Water quality (stream flow rates, turbidity, and chemical composition) will be measured by the students with guidance and support of locals. Public education about watershed protection, streamside restoration, and marine-river interactions will take place through student presentation, student-run web sites, and recruitment of volunteers.
