Description

Lunds Gulch is a Pacific coastal stream in Snohomish County, Washington that supports runs of Chum and Coho salmon, Steelhead, and populations of resident cutthroat trout. Earlier logging and poor land use practices in the surrounding suburbs have led to stream channelization, culvert barrier problems and flash flooding in the river. In a cooperative effort to restore the natural character of Lunds Gulch, NOAA and the Fish America Foundation have joined forces with the Adopt-A-Stream Foundation to increase spawning and rearing habitat, control flooding and sedimentation, and to reduce flow velocity in the portion of the stream within Meadowdale County Park. With help from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and the Snohomish County Parks and Recreation Department, construction was performed to widen parts of the stream channel along with the installation of large, woody debris to increase pool habitat and create natural channel meanders. This will increase the streams capacity to handle increased volumes of water at reduced velocities. The introduction of grade control structures will maintain gravel beds spawning areas for resident cutthroat and anadromous fish species. Volunteers from local schools and scout troops, with the help of the onsite park ranger, further enhanced water quality in Lunds Gulch with the planting of native riparian vegetation. In addition, the Bracketts Landing Foundation has purchased $2 million worth of riparian lands in the watershed, further increasing the value of this project, estimated at $42,000. The project has been submitted to this inventory by USEPA with the permission of NOAA.
