JITW Lummi Nation Service Organization Racehorse Creek Riparian Interplant and Assessment RH1 funded FY2002. WWO02-063. This 300 acre riparian site borders Racehorse Creek and the North Fork of the Nooksack River. The forest stands on site feature diverse silvicultural conditions and stages of maturity. 3 activities will take place on this site. 1. Seedling establishment maintenance on 17 acres on the right bank of Racehorse Creek. Treatment will consist of using power brushers to cutback competing vegetation in a five-foot radius from each plant stem. This will enhance growth and reduce competition for the recently planted seedlings. 2. Index Site Assessment will occur on 20 plots. LNR and NNR staff will train DTWs in silvicultural stand assessment techniques with help from NRCS. Stand data will be collected from permanently monumented 1/25th acre plots. Data will be collected on tree age and size, understory species composition and general site characteristics such as soils, aspect and canopy closure. A report with project prescriptions will be provided in year 2 of the agreement. 3. Pre-project Assessment Silvicultural data will be collected on conifer species, including age, size and shrub and deciduous competition on 15 1/50th acre plots.
