Description

Nooksack/NSEA/MM-1 Riparian Maintenance and Monitoring JITW01-NS-NSEA-MM1/WWO01-055 This project is covered by a cooperative agreement, and there are separate landowner agreements for each project site, originally signed in 1999, the first year of work on the site. This project will complete riparian monitoring and maintenance on a number of previously funded riparian restoration project sites. The Espeland site (BS-2) was planted in Winter 2000 with funding remaining from JITW 1998 funds, and will be maintained for 2001 under the JITW 2000 grant. The Hull, Klander, and Halderman projects TC-2, TC-3, TC-4 respectively, were planted under JITW 2000 and will be maintained during 2001 under the JITW 2000 grant. The Patterson Project (KC-1) will be planted and maintained in 2001 under the JITW 2000 grant. Project activities include continuation of monitoring and maintaining all the above mentioned sites in 2002 and replanting trees and shrubs as neccessary. Maintenance activities include power brushing around each planting to reduce competition from nonnative vegetation. Monitoring activities will be conducted under the Nooksack Recovery Teams Vegetation Monitoring Protocol. Effectiveness of the plant protection devices will be noted and tracked as will the survival of plants by species, site location area, planting time and general plant health. Photo monitoring will be accomplished using photo points referenced according to the NW Region Watershed Restoration Effectiveness Monitoring Protocol (USFS 1996). Photos taken before project work will be replicated after project completion and in subsequent years. NSEA will monitor the site for a minimum of three years. Watershed benefits are the following: BLack Slough, Tenmile Creek and Kendall Creek are all impacted by surrounding agricultural and other land use. These projects will reduce some of those impacts by reestablishing riparian cover, which will reduce water temperature, create a source for future LWD recruitment, filter pollutants and create wildlife habitat. Benefits to species include coho and chum salmon, cutthroat trout, songbirds, birds of prey, mammals, and amphibians which utilize riparian habitat. Accomplishment calculations for each site are the following: Site 1 BS2/Espeland riparian area 900 feet in length by 50 feet in width 900 x 50 = 45000/43560 = 1.03 acres Site 2 TC2/Halderman riparian area 420 feet long, by 25 feet wide 420 x 25 = 10500/43560 = 0.24 acres Site 3 TC3/Hull riparian area 660 feet long by 35 feet wide 660 x 35 = 23100/43560 = 0.53 acres Site 4 TC4/Klander riparian area 480 feet long by 50 feet wide 480 x 50 = 24000/43560 = 0.55 acres Site 5 KC1-2/Patterson riparian area 100 feet long X 500 feet wide 100 x 500= 50000/43560 = 1.15 acres United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Partners for Fish and Wildlife Grant Number 134100012
