Monitoring Plan: Use of hydroacoustics, purse-seining, pit-tags, and video monitoring to assess the effectiveness of all measures. For monitoring updates see http://www.nws.usace.army.mil/publicmenu/DOCUMENTS/LWSC.pdf; Resource Issue: Since the locks were built in 1917, two species of anadromous salmon have become extinct. Remaining stock are declining and research indicates this may be attributed to injury and mortality of smolts as they migrate through the locks.; Projected Outcomes: Provide improved successful salmon and steelhead smolt outmigration from Lake Washington basin to Puget Soung through the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks; Design Measure: Four smolt slides in two spillway bays, addition of 6 variable speed motors for the large lock valves to slow the fill, installation of two strobe light systems at eh large lock culvert intakes (to keep smolts away), and annual barnacle removal in the large lock conduits (to reduce smolt injury).Endangered Species: Bald Eagles, Bull Trout, Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon. Project Number: 72 in WA
