Description    


Smolt ennumeration monitoring was conducted in six watersheds on the North Olympic Peninsula during 2013. Fence weirs were installed and fished on Ennis Creek, Salt Creek, East Twin River, West Twin River and Deep Creek. Two screw traps were also deployed and fished on the Elwha River on Indian Creek and the Little River. Total production estimates were made for each watershed for coho, steelhead, chinook and pink salmon. This data is integral for salmon management forums as well as to evaluate ongoing restoration and recovery efforts.

Project Benefit    


This project is used for both reserach and salmon management purposes. For research the data produced is an important metric to evaluate the response of watershed restoration efforts. Ennis Creek is in the early stages of watershed scale restoration that includes the removal of an 80 acre mill site on its historic estuary. Salt Creek is undergoing systematic correction of 31 human caused fish passage barriers. East and West Twin Rivers and Deep Creek are part of the Intensively Monitored Watershed Project. While the Elwha River will have two hydroelectric dams removed beginning in 2011. The data will also be used in salmon management forums namely for pre-season abundance estimates of SJF coho salmon.
