Description

Of the original amount for this project, $434 was used for salary time for staff to initiate the original project but then it was determined that project had to be replaced. This project was terminated and the remaining funds were transferred to project #2009-3-04.

Project Benefit

Fish surveys provide important baseline information on species assemblages, distribution, and relative abundance. The proposed fish survey data will be used in a variety of ways which will benefit John Day fisheries and watershed health. Updates of baseline information allow for identification of potential limiting factors (e.g., barriers, anthropogenic activities) beyond those identified in planning documents such as the John Day Subbasin Plan (NPPC 2005) and the Conservation and Recovery Plan for Oregon Steelhead Populations in the Middle Columbia River Steelhead Distinct Population Segment (Carmichael and Taylor 2008). Many watershed improvement projects have occurred or are underway (e.g., culvert replacement, water diversion removal, riparian planting). This information can be used to gauge success of these when compared to previous ODFW surveys. Beyond the utility for monitoring habitat improvements, data can identify locations where habitat restoration or preservation would be beneficial to fisheries. This information will also assist in improving modeling exercises such as Ecosystem Diagnosis and Treatment (EDT).
