Description
As proposed the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service designed the instream structures, using natural channel design techniequest to stablize the eroding stream banks and create instream rock and wood structures to enhance fish habitat for instream cover which was lacking the stream reach. US Fish and Wildlife and the landowner work together on this project and stablized approximately 200 feet of eroding streambank and enhanced the riparian habitat to provide better instream habitat for salmon, steelhead and other fish. Site 1: One rock instream structure and two wood instream structures were constructed at site one and the site was planted with native shrubs and trees. Site 2: Native plants were not planted at site two. After evaluation it was determined that the final treatment at site three likely solved the downstream erosion problem so the treament at site two was not necessary. Site 3: Two rock instream structures and two wood instream structures were constructed at site three and the area was planted with native shrubs and trees. The two wood instream structures were a slight deviation to the original proposal. The two wood instream structures were added to more efficiently reduce erosion and create instream fish habitat (pool and cover habitat). The constructed habitat improvements are expected to reduce bank erosion over the long-term and provide enhanced fish habitat in the form of pool and instream cover.
Project Benefit
Clear Creek is a spawning stream for both ESA listed Snake River steelhead and Chinook salmon. Benefits to both species from the proposed project include the reduction of sediment input into Clear Creek, and an increase in instream structure habitat and riparian vegetation for fish cover.
