Description

The project objective was to enhance fish passage by removal of a large log jam. The objectives remained largely the same as proposed. In addition to removing the large primary log jam blocking fish passage, three other smaller log jams were modified to improve fish passage in South Fork Clear Creek. As planned, light weight equipment including a chainsaw and grip hoists were used to modify the jams to accommodate fish passage. The project was planned in stages to coincide with annual high water events likely to cause wood debris movements and channel adjustments. During fall of 2007, before the first winter flow events, the large barrier was modified in anticipation of winter flows and transporting debris associated with the removal of the blockage. Following the winter high water season the blockages were assessed and additional modification occurred as needed. The project success was based on the presence of spawning salmon above the targeted blockages. Post project monitoring revealed successful spawning and presence of juvenile rearing salmon above all of the removal sites.

Project Benefit

Habitat quality in S.F. Clear Creek is assumed to be good. We observed high frequencies of complex pools, high densities of woody debris, clean sorted gravels and presence of all three salmonid species. These observations backup our assumption that habitat quality is high. The primary project benefit was allowing fish access to new habitat further up the stream.

Field reconnaissance (9-18-08) of habitat upstream from logjams identified in 2007 revealed two more logjams. Barrier #3 was 1.2 miles above the upper logjam and approximately 1.7 miles from the mouth of SF Clear Creek. Dives above and below this barrier confirmed that it was the limit of Coho and Chinook distribution in the creek. Dives also confirmed the presence of thousands of juvenile Coho in the pools between the logjams that were cleared in 2007 and this logjam. Another 3800 above this new logjam, an enormous logjam (Barrier #4) was located, approximately five times larger than Barrier #3. Habitat for 2000 above this uppermost logjam was surveyed and identified as high quality spawning and rearing habitat for coho. In the future, strategic modification of this logjam could allow fish passage without removing it. Due to camera malfunction, no pictures of this logjam were taken.

Based on GIS maps, we estimated that a total of 2.0 miles of new habitat was made accessible through project actions. Total distance of new habitat available was based on the presence of rearing juveniles and spawning adult Chinook and Coho Salmon following barrier treatments.
