Description    


From 2009 to 2011, ADF&G, with project partners, helped fund a total of 9 projects in the Fairbanks area. Only one project involved the removal of structures detrimental to juvenile salmon, with 50 feet of rock, concrete block and broken concrete slabs removed from the river. In total, 254 linear feet of stream bank was re-vegetated using brush layers and trenched willow. An additional 730 feet (5,994 square feet) of riparian area was vegetated using transplanted rooted native vegetation and native vegetated mat. An additional 1,261 linear feet of stream bank was protected using root wads, cabled spruce trees and elevated, light penetrating walkways. Project partners included the USFWS, Tanana Valley Watershed Association, Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and private landowners.

Project Benefit    


This project will result in: the removal of detrimental structures from area streams; increased fish habitat quantity and quality; improved riparian vegetation and riparian function; increased river bank stability; and more responsible development of riparian areas. These results will help ensure healthy fish populations and may have significant economic and recreational impacts to residents of the Fairbanks area.
