Description

Monitoring and evaluation of the Tribal Chinook salmon fishery will occur throughout the season. Monitoring of the fishery was achieved through roving creel surveys throughout the FMAs, with special emphasis on known successful fishing sites to achieve accurate and precise harvest data. Salmon escapement estimates will be accomplished through ground and aerial spawning ground surveys. Harvest rate impacts will be completed in December 2009 once all adult escapement and catch estimates are finalized. Non-monetary social benefits identified in the TRMP will be analyzed in December 2009 based on Tribal participation in fisherman meetings, salmon hunting, ceremonies, and awareness of recovery. The results of the 2009 Tribal fishery will be included in the PCSRF annual report which will be submitted in December.

Project Benefit

Promote recovery and restoration of ESA-listed salmonids through adaptive harvest monitoring management consistent with the conservation based Tribal Resources Management Plan.

          Description of monitoring
The Shoshone Bannock Tribes will monitor and report treaty harvest levels at the population level for 22 natural origin and 4 hatchery origin populations of Snake River spring/summer Chinook salmon. Anadromous fishery staff will conduct population monitoring to assess annual adult escapement to 22 fishery management areas and determine level of impacts to salmon populations listed under the Endangered Species Act.
