Description

The project was completed as proposed, although the final match costs were slightly higher than originally estimated. The length of abandoned eroded channel was slightly more than originally estimated 7,867 [1.49 miles] versus 7,830 [1.44]. The vegetation survival was enhanced tremendously by supplemental watering. Instream habitat involved bank stabilization through the use of logs, log barbs and vegetation. Riparian treatments included vegetation along 1.1 miles of streambank and fencing to exclude livestock along 1.25 miles of streambank.

Project Benefit

Erosion patterns and riparian degradation in the two Corral Creek project sites will be reduced through implementation of designed riparian restoration practices. Improved stream and riparian function will reduce erosion, sedimentation, and water temperatures, return flow to a natural channel with riparian connectivity thereby increasing stream and riparian habitat complexity. Riparian plantings will increase shading and woody debris recruitment potential. Restoration of meadow/wetlands is expected to reduce peak storm discharges and improve stream flows. Fish passage to upper Corral Creek will be enhanced and steelhead spawning, incubation and early rearing is expected to improve.

Photo points will be established and monitoring will occur twice per year for five years. Plant establishment will be evaluated at the same time as will condition of structures. If structural failures are identified by Latah SWCD staff, professional engineering assistance will be requested for maintenance recommendations. Additional water quality monitoring and habitat conditions will be undertaken using adopted protocols with funding secured from BPA and Department of Environmental Quality's 319 program.
