Description

This project identified habitat factors limiting production of salmonids emigrating from and immigrating to the Klickitat Subbasin through the delta at its confluence with the Columbia River. The project assembled information about existing conditions that helped lay the foundation for identifying future assessment needs and conceptual treatments for restoration. Historically, Columbia River tributary confluences were characterized by large cottonwood galleries with multiple distributary channels. Bonneville Pool inundation and ramping fluctuations have altered historic conditions at the Klickitat/Columbia confluence. The Yakama Nation confirms that the shallower and broader delta has created passage issues for out-migrating juveniles and in-migrating adults, while creating habitat conditions more conducive to native and non-native piscivorous fish and birds preying on Klickitat Subbasin wild and hatchery salmonids.

Project Benefit

The ultimate goal is to determine if there is a passage problem, characterize existing conditions and eventually prioritize restoration scenarios to provide improved passage for adult and juvenile salmonids.
Assessment information will be used to benefit the following stocks:
Upper Columbia River summer/fall-run ESU (Chinook salmon)
Middle Columbia spring-run ESU (Chinook salmon)
Middle Columbia River DPS (Steelhead)
