Description

The conservation easement was secured on approximately 247 acres of meadow property in the Red River Watershed in Idaho County, Idaho. The date of closing and recording was June 30, 2010. The mainstem Red River runs through the property and provides invaluable spawning and rearing habitat for Chinook salmon, steelhead, and other resident fish species.

This project had been extended from the original completion date of 11/30/09 to 07/31/2010 due to complications with easement partners (RMEF, BPA, & NPT) and making sure each entities goals and objectives were reflected in the CE Deed document. An additional setback was the need for an appraisal addendum to take out additional retained acreage based on the landowners request. This is also reflected in the final acreage the conservation easement covers. Originally, it was proposed to secure 271 acres and the final acreage secured was 247.

Project on-the-ground restoration activities have occurred prior and will continue to occur through separate Bonneville contracts.

Project Benefit

Securing a conservation easement on this property will eliminate grazing and development within this important habitat area. Restoration efforts, some currently in process, will be protected for perpetuity. Some of those treatments include restoration of the riparian corridor which will provide needed shade to reduce stream temperatures, additon of woody debris to provide overhead cover, deeper pools, and habitat complexity to the stream. Siegel Creek, a major steelhead spawning stream is located within this property.

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will do annual inspections in perpetuity to make sure the landowners are complying with the easement provisions. Restoration efforts will be monitored by the match project sponsors. Because only one monitoring type can be selected at this time, following are additional monitoring actions: Salmonid Monitoring, Physical monitoring to follow up the pretreatment aka baseline monitoring and water monitoring for temperature and turbidity.
