Description

TEPA conducted sampling for benthic macro-invertebrates during July and August of 2008. Samples were collected from seven (7) anadromous tributaries to the Trinity River and the Trinity River. All sampling points were located on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation. The sample collected were sent to John Lee Associates for taxonomic identification to the genus level and development of analysis metrics. The analysis metrics received from John Lee Associates were incorporated into TEPAs EDAS database for further annual trend analysis.

Project Benefit

Since FY2000 samplings of benthic macro-invertebrates have been used as an indicator of water quality, substrate composition and watershed health for water bodies of the Hoopa Valley Reservation. The quantification of abundance and diversity of macro-invertebrates within each stream has indicated the level of impairment in several streams as a result of land use. These results have a direct relationship on salmonids health since macro-invertebrates are the primary food source for young-of-the-year and also share some of the same habitat requirements.
