Description

Shoshone Bannock Tribes Fish and Wildlife Department with the assistance of Fish and Game Enforcement will monitor and evaluate the Tribes Chinook salmon fisheries; collect, analyze, and report data on proposed fisheries. Annually, staff develops protocols for monitoring and evaluating Chinook salmon fisheries in a structured M & E Plan. Prior to the season, SBT will hire monitors and meet with enforcement to discuss the M & E Plan, data collection, analyses, and reporting requirements necessary throughout the season. Staff collects efforts, hours per effort, fish caught per effort, fish released per effort, indirect mortality, gear used, area, and time. Biologists will estimate total Tribal harvest for each population with 95% CI at the conclusion of the harvest season. In addition, the Tribes will obtain Snake River Chinook salmon harvest estimates from other treaty and non-treaty fisheries and determine whether equitable harvest was achieved.

Project Benefit

Promote recovery and restoration of ESA-listed salmonids through adaptive harvest monitoring management consistent with the conservation based Tribal Resources Management Plan.

          Description of monitoring
The Shoshone Bannock Tribes will monitor and report treaty harvest levels at the population level for 22 natural origin and 4 hatchery origin populations of Snake River spring/summer Chinook salmon. Anadromous fishery staff will conduct population monitoring to assess annual adult escapement to 22 fishery management areas and determine level of impacts to salmon populations listed under the Endangered Species Act.
