Description

Steelhead are listed as threatened for our area. Their numbers appear to be in decline. The Tribe installed an adult fish weir that would be used to evaluate the number, condition and migration timing of adult steelhead in the Upper Yamhill basin. This would compliment an ongoing smolt survey program.

Project Benefit

Little is known about the history and current status of Upper Willamette ESU steelhead on the west side of the watershed. This project would give the Tribe the ability to study the number, condition, genetic orgin and migration timing of listed steelhead and other anadromous species in the Upper Yamhill Basin

          Description of monitoring
30The fish weir will be used to evaluate the population, health and timing of the migration of adult steelhead in Agency Creek. Agency Creek is in the fifth-field watershed of the Upper South Yamhill River, a subbasin in the Upper Willamette steelhead ESU. This project is directly applicable to the Salmon Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation goal of the PCSR Funds. The Critical Habitat Analytical Review Team concluded that little is known about the steelhead population in the Yamhill River Subbasin (HUC4 #1709008) but that Upper South Yamhill may have the highest conservation value in the subbasin. The weir in combination with the smolt trap survey, which we have conducted for the last four years, will form a comprehensive study program that will give us valuable data on the abundance and stock condition of listed steelhead on a major Reservation stream. It will also allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of numerous habitat and fish passage projects on Agency Creek. A majority of the modifications for the adult fish weir were completed in the fall of 2006. The final installation will be completed in the fall of 2007. For 2006 and smolt escapement was estimated to be 6,424 coho smolts and 362 steelhead smolts. The estimates for 2007 were 4,130 coho smolts and 144 steelhead smolts.
