Description

The Tribe focused most of the nearshore research on Bainbridge Island, continuing to sample four primary sites around the Island and 12 rotating sites every two weeks. This project continued the Tribal/City of Bainbridge Island partnership begun in 2002 using the Puget Sound beach seining protocol. The tribe also sampled Miller Bay, Liberty Bay, Dyes Inlet, Manchester, and Carpenter estuary on a less frequent basis. In all cases the emphasis was on measuring all captured Chinook and coho salmon, checking for fin clips and coded wire tags, and measuring the first thirty of all other species encountered and obtaining a total count of the fish released. The information was compiled in an Access georeferenced-database, analyzed, and shared with agencies requesting specific summaries of the data.
The Tribe continued to work with Kitsap County and Battelle Northwest Laboratories to develop the East Kitsap Nearshore Assessment protocol.

Project Benefit

Monitoring of juvenile salmonid use of the nearshore zone will yield essential information about habitat preference, outmigration timing, migration routes through Puget Sound for various stocks, species interactions, and hatchery/wild interactions. Identifying areas where juvenile salmon consistently aggregate will guide nearshore restoration and protection efforts, and inform protective regulations promulagated by local governments. The Tribes beach seine effort provides the biological information to supplement the Bainbridge Island Nearshore Assessment and also provides pre- and post-monitoring for several SRFB and EPA Superfund sites.
