Description
The North Slough project was postponed indefinitely during the planning stages due to site access issues with Olympic National Park. Quinault Indian Nation expended $32969.45 in wages/fringe/indirect (planning biologist) and a professional services agreement for cost estimates and engineering planning by Entrix, Inc. $32,969.45 was spent from the allocated funds. The remainder ($190,656.55) will be diverted to project 2005-6, Alder Creek Side Channel Pilot Project.
Project Benefit
The short-term project objective is to influence the channel planform and alignment of North Slough by preventing the mainstem of the Quinault River from occupying the alignment of North Slough. Additional benefits of the project include: 1) diffusing the hydraulic energy of the Quinault River during flood events, 2) increasing the quantity and quality of aquatic habitat by increasing channel length, depth, pool frequency, and cover, 3) trapping mobile woody debris (drift), and 4) protecting the existing sockeye and coho salmon habitat.
The long-term objective of the project is to establish hard points within the localized area of the floodplain that will allow mature coniferous forest patches to develop. These patches will ultimately influence geomorphic traits of the Quinault River in the area through protection of North Slough as a mature side channel, recruitment of key members from the established coniferous forest, maintain spawning and rearing habitat for sockeye and coho salmon, and a narrowing of the Quinault River mainstem channel width.
