Description
The two side by side 24 inch culverts located near the mouth of Catholic Creek that blocked access to 9.6 miles of suitable steelhead spawning and rearing habitat were removed and a used 60 foot flat car bridge was installed improving steelhead access to spawning and rearing habitat and improvement to the riparian habitat. Prior to installation, longitudinal profiles and cross-sections of the project area were assessed. Volunteers treated noxious weeds and implemented riparian planting along and upsteam of the project area.
Project Benefit
Installation of the bridge will remove a fish barrier and provide connectivity for ESA listed steelhead to their historical habitat. The bridge will also withstand high flow events. Riparian treatment will improve the stream bank providing good habitat and reduce or eliminated invasive plant species.

The Nez Perce Tribe Water Resources Division conduted monitoring and evaluation before, during and after the activities associated with this project. Monitoring involved taking longitudinal profiles and cross-sections before and after project installation to ensure adequate channel design. A pressure transducer was installed to evaluate flows, temperature, turbidity measurements. Continued visual monitoring and photopoints taken every few months after project completion. There was a site evaluation by US Army COE and Idaho Water Resources Dept. after project completion. |
