Description

This project was successfully completed in 2008. Genetic analysis was completed on several Elwha River salmon stocks (steelhead, chinook, chum) using microsatellite DNA. Mainstem and side channel habitat surveys were completed in the lower river below Elwha Dam. Juenvile fish surveys were completed at several index sites.

Project Benefit

This project represents one of the largest dam removal efforts ever attempted in the United States. The project is being managed by the National Park Service, Bureau of Reclamation and the Lower Elwha Tribe. The project has been capped at 184 million dollars. This amount covers purchase of the dams, removal and protection of water supplies for the city of Port Angeles, and hatchery activities. There are no monies set aside for monitoring the ecosystem response.
