Description

The Piling Creek portion of this project was completed during the summer of 2009. An impassible blocking culvert was removed and replaced with a 30 pre-fabricated bridge. This treatment will allow passage of both adult and juvenile salmonids to off-channel habitats of the Pysht River. Because the cost of the Piling Creek portion accounted for all of the project, the Lost Creek project was not completed. Lost Creek has been reprogrammed to 2004 supplemental PCSRF monies recieved by the Tribe in 2008.

Project Benefit

These projects have been recommended from a previously completed watershed analysis completed by the Tribe in 2005 (Pysht River Floodplain Assessment). Correction of the barrier at Piling Creek will restore access to approximately 3.5 acres of wetlands and ponds upstream of the 2100 road. This area is thought to be capable of providing high quality rearing habitat for multiple species. At Lost Creek, the primary benefits will be to increase the amount of water routed into the 2100 road swamp, an extensive wetland/pond complex of ~15 acres size. The contribution of water from Lost Creek will increase the size of this wetland complex and likely provide better connection to egress to the Pysht River.

No monitoring has been completed yet following installation of the new bridge in 2008. A visual survey in the spring of 2009 did not result in fish being observed above the new bridge site. The tribe hopes to increase post-project monitoring efforts in 2010.
