Description

A floating screw trap was on the lower mainstem of the Stillaguamish River. Smolt outmigration timing and magnitude is an important missing component of salmonid life history within the watershed. The collection of 2006 amd 2007 outmigration data will lead to the development of production indexes and possibly production estimate models. The trap was operated from February and to June each year.

Project Benefit

Environmental factors during the freshwater rearing stage have a significant impact on the survival of salmonids. Without measurements of freshwater production, guesses based on some average environmental condition must be used. Collection of outmigrant smolt data will allow us to quantify on an annual basis the relative contribution of parent escapement as well as measure the degree to which habitat restoration is succeeding.
