Description

Plans and specifications were done and the new bridge consists of pre-cast, pre-stress concrete tri-deck beams on pile driven foundations. The old culvert was removed; the channel was reshaped and rip-rapped. The bridge component was completed on August 22, 2007 and the disturbed areas were re-vegetated with native trees, shrubs and grasses by December 2007.

The project removed the blockage, increased fish passage, improved channel conditions, and increased spawning and rearing fish habitat for Snake River Basin ESU Steelhead. In addition, the bridge will pass flows in excess of a 500 year event as compared to a culvert designed for a 100 year flood event.

Project Benefit

This will remove the existing fish barrier and replace it with a bridge structure that will provide a natural stream bed to facilitate passage for ESA listed Snake River Basin ESU Steelhead.

      Monitoring text (from Phase I)
Pre work and post implementation monitoring was conducted for this project. The subgrantee documented that the structure was built as planned and redocumented the newly constructed streambed which has a different subplane. The bridge engineering document on file with the Office of Species Conservation. In addition, the stream channel will be monitored at the bridge locations to ensure no head cutting occurs. Given the flashy nature of the system and the amount of bed load that moves, the channel will be allowed to adjust on its own for two years. After two high flow events the sites will be revisited by an in-house interdisciplinary team to determine if any further work is needed. All plantings will be monitored for survival and species composition by randomly selected one meter square vegetation plots using a Daubenmire frame and 5m survival plots.
