Description

Project supported technical staff necessary to estimate annual chinook, coho, and sockeye salmon escapement to the Quillayute River. In cooperation with WDFW, Quileute Tribal staff conducted aerial (helicopter), float, and foot surveys to count live/dead adults or redds in specified index reaches of the Dickey, Sol Duc, Bogachiel, and Calawah rivers (which comprise the Quillayute watershed). Sockeye escapement was estimated for the Lake Pleasant system. Foot surveys also involved sampling to recover coded-wire tagged coho and chinook.

Project Benefit

Accurate escapement estimates are essential to estimating and monitoring the abundance of chinook, coho, and sockeye populations in the Quillayute system. Escapement estimates are used to forecast abundance and plan annual harvest management regimes. Recovery of coded wire tagged coho provides the data required to monitor the Sol Duc coho PSC indicator stock. Results will indicate where numbers have improved because of forest priaces or restoration; or, where they have declined because of need for these.

          Description of monitoring
Escapement estimates comprise the basic index of annual abundance necessary to monitor stock status, inform annual harvest management, and guide habitat restoration and protection efforts.
