Description

Project involved installation and operation of coho smolt traps (weirs) in five tributaries and a rotary screw trap on the mainstem of Dickey River from March - July 2006. The data enabled estimation of coho smolt production and fresh water survival in the Dickey River system. Outmigrant smolts captured in the tributary traps and marked (fin-clipped). Recapture of marked fish in the mainstem screw trap provided the data necessary to estimating total annual smolt production for the Dickey system; and monitored the effectiveness of forest practices after implementaiton of the DNR forests and fish regulations.

Project Benefit

Smolt production estimates contribute to accurate forecasting of coho abundance in the Quillayute / Sol Duc watershed, and is fundamentally important to setting harvest management objectives and planning fisheries. The project continued a long-term effort to monitor coho production and stock status in the system, in cooperation with WDFW.

          Description of monitoring
Smolt abundance essential to estimating and monitoring coho productivity, forecasting abundance, and planning harvest management. It allows evaluation of effectiveness of forest practices (obligations and rules), as well.
