Description

LWD harvest and stockpiling occurred at sites 3 and 4 during the summer of 2008. An administrative mishandling of the tribal hydraulics permit application precluded issuance of the permit during the seasonal in-water work period. In-water work was not completed prior to 5/31/09 and so arrangements were made to transfer grant money to the materials line item so that cable and clamps could be purchased. The cable and clamps will be used to secure LWD jams when they are constructed at some point in the future. These materials were purchased in May of 2009. In addition, the remaining balance of the grant was transferred to PCSRF FY05 Phase IV Equipment Acquisition project.

Project Benefit

The proposed actions target mid-Columbia steelhead (Endangered Species Act-Threatened) and spring Chinook salmon (Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife-Depressed). Quantity and quality of juvenile rearing and adult holding habitat will be improved considerably. Benefits are also expected for spawning habitat as a result of improved substrate sorting and reduced fine sediment introduction.

All three project sites occur within a 5-mile reach: -that has been surveyed annually for steelhead and spring Chinook spawning for the last 3 years. Surveys are expected to continue indefinitely. -that contains four TFW habitat segments which are intended to be resurveyed every 5 to 7 years. Snorkel surveys were completed for each segment. At each site: -Snorkel surveys will be conducted prior to implementation. -Vegetation survival will be monitored following implementation with a 50% target. -Profile and cross-section surveys will be completed prior to implementation. -Active-channel substrate will be characterized prior to implementation. -An as-built profile survey will be completed. Cross-sections will be surveyed as time allows.
