Description

The project is complete. Bids for three comparable machines were solicited and received. CEKCCD staff presented the results to the Central and Eastern district boards on December 6 and December 8, 2005, respectively for final approval. A no-till drill was selected and purchased, and is being used by farmers in the Central and Eastern Klickitat County Conservation District.

Project Benefit

Both watersheds are home to mid-Columbia steelhead (ESA threatened) and the Klickitat subbasin also supports spring and fall Chinook, and coho salmon. The project is expected to increase egg survival and winter rearing conditions. Egg survival is expected to increase by having less fine sediment introduced (and subsequently deposited) to stream channels. Reduced fine sediment introduction will also decrease turbidity (which tends to be high during the winter) resulting in better foraging conditions. It should also result in increased pool volumes.

The use agreement with CEKCCD will involve an annual report that provides number of acres tilled and number of individuals served. The YNFP monitors spawning of steelhead and salmon via the Klickitat Monitoring and Evaluation Project (M&E). The M&E project and KWEP share habitat monitoring responsibilities including sediment, temperature, and habitat.
