Description

Critical thermal refugia sites were identified, assessed, and inventoried within the range of spring Chinook and summer steelhead in the Salmon River watershed. Biological and physical characteristics of each identified site was assessed weekly during August and September when water temperatures are stressfull for salmon. Karuk fisheries staff worked in cooperation with the Salmon River Restoration Council (SRRC), a local watershed groups in the Salmon River, to collect field data. ArcView GIS maps are being developed that containing site locations and other attributes.

Project Benefit

Protection of cold water refugia sites that are critical to summer steelhead and spring run chinook in the temperature impaired Salmon River.
