Description
Project completed as proposed. Implemented appropriate Best Watershed Management Practice (BMPs) treatments, at a number of distinct sites in the Potlatch River watershed-identified throughout the project. Examples of BMP treatments include: fencing, plantings, nutrient management systems, offsite watering, direct seeding systems, erosion control structures, rocking forest roads, seeding cut slopes, and recovery of channeled stream captured by abandoned rail or roadway. Project activities encompassed landowner outreach and coordination; identification of target projects; coordination of technical and financial resources necessary to implement identified projects; project planning, engineering and permitting; installation/implementation of project measures; and monitoring. Multiple implementation sites reported in the PCSRF database by watershed, including the following: Big Bear Creek, Corral Creek, Little Bear Creek, Little Potlatch Creek, Middle Potlatch Creek, and Pine Creek.
Project Benefit
Possible benefits (depending on specific BMPs implemented) could include improvement of Snake River Basin ESU steelhead spawning and rearing habitat through: decreased erosion; decreased sediment loading; decreases in bacteria, organic and nutrient loading to streams; increased upland water retention; improved riparian function; and decreased high stream temperatures.

Photo point monitoring occured in 2007. Protocal is a slightly modified version of Photo Point Monitoring Handbook, PNW-GTR-526, by Frederick C. Hall. Sites will be revisited to repeat the photo points. Site visites will continue to be conducted to check survival.
The Latah Soil and water Conservation District through a contract with the United States Geological Survey continues to maintain a stream gauging station on the Potlatch River.
In addition, the Idaho Soil Conservation Commission maintains temperature gauges through the watershed. The Idaho Association of Soil Conservation Districts and the Idaho Department of Agriculture continue to monitor water quality at 17 sites throughout the watershed. |
