Description

The property was purchased in early October, and the project is now complete. It is important to note that limited restoration (primarily riparian revegetation) will be undertaken under a future grant.

Project Benefit

The project targets habitat protection for spring Chinook, coho, steelhead and resident trout. The side channel is of exceptional value as off-channel rearing habitat. The Yakimas hydrograph is inverted, because of irrigation release from over 800,000 acre-feet of artificial storage above the subject property. Stream flow is artificially high throughout the summer. As such, rearing habitat for young of the year salmonids is severely compromised in the mainstem. Off channel habitats, such as that found within the Holmes side channel, is critical for juvenile rearing habitat. Over 80% of the bioregions terrestrial wildlife will also benefit from this habitat protection effort.
