Description

During the contract period, this first phase of the $10.5 million project has been completed, and the second phase has been initiated. Included in the first phase was welding and burying about 3000 feet of 72 inch diameter Weholite pipe of which 812 feet was purchased using PCSRF FY 2001 money. Also the project includes burying 900 feet of concrete pipe and installing a debris screen at the upper end of the project. The second phase is cost shared and will consist of installing approximately 2,700 feet of 60 inch and 5,300 feet of 48 inch HDPE pipe. The second phase will connect to the first phase, and is designed to be ready for the third and final phase of construction to continue after phase two is complete.

Project Benefit

1. Eliminates an adult fish passage barrier at the Neal Creek Diversion. 2. Eliminates an antiquated fish Screen to the eastside ditch and entrainment of juvenile salmonids. 3. Eliminates glacial sediment from entering a clear water tributary (Neal Cr.) and 4. provides water savings to 5-10 cfs will be restored as rpjected as instream flow in the East Fork Hood River.

The M&E for this project will include spawning and juvenile fish surveys in the stream including the reach upstream of the diversion dam. Continued fish salvage in the irrigation canal will be coordinated with EFID to eliminate entrainment of residual fish that live and over winter in the Eastside Irrigation Canal.
