Description    


The purpose of this project is to implement the California Coastal Monitoring Plan (CMP) in coastal Mendocino County watersheds. Central California Coast (CCC) Coho Salmon Evolutionarily Significant Unit (ESU), California Coastal (CC) Chinook Salmon ESU, and Northern California (NC) steelhead Distinct Population Segment (DPS) are listed as either threatened or endangered under federal and state Endangered Species Acts. Monitoring data from this project provides information to assess population status and trends of these listed species in significant portions of their range. Specifically, this project supports (1) two CDFW staff biologists to lead and implement the CMP program in coastal Mendocino County, and (2) life cycle monitoring (LCM) on the South Fork Noyo River.

Project Benefit    


Recovery of these distinct units of salmonids depends on whether important populations have reached abundance thresholds, and if biological recovery criteria are met (NMFS 2012, NMFS 2016, Spence et al. 2008). This project provides measures of recovery by producing annual escapement estimates, as well as measures of freshwater and marine influence on observed trends in abundance. Salmonid habitat restoration planning, and the implementation of recovery plans and population supplementation relies upon salmonid abundance, distribution, and diversity information obtained through the Mendocino Coastal Monitoring Program.
