Description
The purpose of this project was to prepare for the reintroduction of Coho Salmon into the Oregon portion of the Klamath River basin following the removal of four hydroelectric dams that is scheduled to occur in 2024. Preparation involved coordinating and conducting pre-dam removal studies that investigated limiting factors and monitoring strategies in preparation for the recolonization of Coho Salmon and subsequent monitoring. Partner organizations included The Klamath Tribes, NOAA, USFWS, Trout Unlimited, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt.
Project Benefit
The goal of this project is to complete the Reintroduction Implementation Plan (Implementation Plan) for Coho Salmon into the Oregon portion of the Klamath River Basin. This plan followed the guidelines set forth in ODFWs 2008 A Plan for the Reintroduction of Anadromous Fish in the Upper Klamath Basin (Reintroduction Plan). The Implementation Plan will serve as an administrative Appendix to the ODFW Klamath River Basin Fish Management Plan by identifying facilities and near and long-term actions necessary to address key uncertainties regarding recolonization and potential future active reintroduction of Coho Salmon; and by developing specific monitoring and evaluation strategies and other investigations as appropriate to narrow uncertainties. The Implementation Plan identifies criteria and research protocols for determining when natural recolonization of Coho Salmon is not occurring, or is occurring too slowly. Pre-dam removal assessments of available habitat will help determine the potential for Coho Salmon recolonization and potential occupancy.

Description of monitoring | |
Potential habitat for juvenile Coho salmon was surveyed in Spencer Creek, a tributary to the Klamath River. Reaches within Spencer Creek were sampled for juvenile salmonids, salmonids were enumerated and PIT tagged when captured. Temperature loggers were deployed throughout Spencer Creek and the Klamath River. |
