Description

This project monitored trends in populations of North Umpqua salmonids, specifically spring Chinook, coho, and summer and winter steelhead. Other species monitored included pacific lamprey, smallmouth bass, fall Chinook, and chum. Data and information from this monitoring effort was used both locally and statewide in annual reports, management and restoration decisions, publications, and for other purposes.

PCSRF FFY 2021 and 2022 funds were expended on project costs during the corresponding FFY contract award period.

Project Benefit

The goal of this project is to estimate the run size of a variety of salmonid and other fish species, determine run-timing, evaluate long-term population trends, and to monitor river temperature. Data collected will be available to fisheries managers throughout the state and can be used to predict run size in other basins.

Description of monitoring
This project enumerated adult/jack salmonids and other species from video recorded in the Winchester Dam fish ladder as they passed upstream on the North Umpqua River. Adults/jacks were counted by species and fin clip by reviewing non-uniform stratified samples from tapes recorded 24/7/365.
