Description
This project funded restoration actions through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). CREP is a cooperative effort between the USDA and the State of Oregon targeted at establishing forested riparian buffers along eligible streams on agricultural land for the purpose of improving water quality and fish recovery in Oregon. The OWEB CREP program cost shared with the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) and landowners to implement riparian restoration actions. The acres reported for this project are based on USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) acres enrolled in CREP within the state of Oregon. The miles of stream and streambank treated are calculated based on: 1) the FSA reported acres; and 2) the assumption that FSA acres represent 100-foot-wide riparian buffers on one side of the stream. FSA data-sharing rules prevent disclosure of specific landowner agreements which limits the information available to report the accomplishments of the CREP agreements.
Project Benefit
The CREP program area includes all streams in Oregon providing habitat for the endangered salmon and trout species that cross agricultural lands. Goals of the program include: reducing water temperature to natural levels; reducing by 50 percent the sediment and nutrient pollution from agricultural lands adjacent to streams, stabilizing stream banks along critical salmon and trout streams, and restoring natural hydraulic and stream channel conditions.
