Description

The Pedersen Nearshore Restoration Project will restore 1.1 acres and 1300 feet of degraded nearshore habitat critical to migrating, ESA Listed, Hood Canal Summer Chum, Puget Sound Chinook and Puget Sound Steelhead. Project design and permitting will lead to the construction of a habitat restoration project focused on the following actions: 1) removal of 440 lineal feed of abandoned railroad grade placed across a historical recurved spit, saltmarsh and back water made up of ~2000CY of fill 2) removal of 260 feet of creosote timber and pile bulkhead 3) removal of a 1000 square foot home perched upon the bulkhead, 4) removal of fill material in the yard place on the historical beach and backshore marsh, 5) remove 0.5 acres of nonnative estuary plants and replant up to 0.1 acres with native species. Unbuild it and they will come.

Due to inaccurate ESU maps used by PRISM, the Puget Sound Chinook metric and Hood Canal summer chum are not allowed to be selected in project metrics at the same time. Because of the funding source (SRFB), summer chum was chosen in metrics and it is documented here, that this sproject also benefits Puget Sound Chinook.

Project Benefit

Project Goal: Restore degraded critical nearshore habitat in Discovery to benefit ESA listed Hood Canal Summer Chum, ESA listed Puget Sound Chinook, and ESA listed Puget Sound Steelhead to support recovery goals. This action will benefit adults and juveniles year around through the restoration of important migratory habitat for adults and juveniles and by the restoration of forage fish spawning habitat to support the food web upon which these species depend.
