Description
This project will evaluate feasibility, alternatives, and develop a conceptual design for restoration of floodplain and riparian conditions on Chico Creek focused on Kitsap County Park property between Erland’s Point Road and SR-3 at the estuary. This stream reach is notable for having high potential for restoration of floodplain connectivity and riparian functions within a public park ownership with visibility and education benefits for the public.
The Tribe will partner with Kitsap County to identify potential restoration elements and alternatives that may include levee and armor removal, removal of fish passage barriers, riparian plant community restoration, large wood placement, and other actions that would ultimately be implemented as part of a reach scale habitat restoration project in later phases. Following the identification of a preferred restoration alternative (as part of the feasibility phase), a conceptual design will be developed.
The project is a high priority based on the importance of the Chico Creek watershed to supporting and contributing to Suquamish tribal treaty fisheries and due to the species found and supported by the watershed (chum, coho, and ESA-listed Puget Sound steelhead). The stream reach is immediately upstream of SR-3, a State-owned culvert at the mouth of the Chico Creek that was replaced in 2023/24 by a long bridge span to improve fish access to the watershed.
Project Benefit
The expected benefits include the comprehensive restoration of stream channel, riparian, and floodplain habitat processes and functions within the lower 0.5 miles of Chico Creek, necessary to support the recovery of listed salmonids and to prevent future listings.
