Description

The Tribe will continue its floodplain restoration and reconnection efforts within our Usual and Accustomed fishing grounds (U&A) by pursuing acquisition and restoration of key riparian parcels along the Dungeness River, and by performing habitat restoration on the Big Quilcene River. Depending on the timeline for due diligence at these sites, this proposal could contribute to riparian parcel acquisition and/or related restoration treatments such as removal of constrictive levees, bulkheads, roads, or constricting bridges; purchase of large wood for current or future instream log jam placement; side-channel construction; and/or strategic reforestation of riparian habitats. Tribal staff would participate in design preparation/permitting and implementation. As opportunities arise, the project may also contribute to similar habitat restoration projects in other watersheds within our U&A.

Project Benefit

Purchasing and restoring riparian areas provide the best opportunity for the Tribe to prevent structures that reduce floodplain habitat from being built. These efforts also provide opportunities for increasing habitat within the floodplain, such as by restoring and reconnecting potential side-channel habitat/refugia for salmonids, and recharging aquifers.
