Surveying Remote Areas and Road Systems for Anadromous Fish Streams in Southeast Alaska

This project will collect data on anadromous fish streams in areas that have not been thoroughly surveyed for anadromous fish presence and incorporate the information in the Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes and its companion Atlas (AWC). This project is focused on collecting data in suspected anadromous fish habitat in the Gulf Coast (i.e., Yakutat, East Icy Bay, and Dry Bay), northern Southeast Alaska (i.e., Juneau, Pleasant Island, Excursion Inlet, eastern Chilkat Peninsula, and Taku River), and southern Southeast Alaska (Zarembo Island, northern Prince of Wales, and Hyder) where development has already occurred, is ongoing, and/or is likely to occur in the future.

This project will survey uncataloged streams for inclusion in the AWC and road stream crossings for fish passage barriers. Once listed in the AWC, streams receive long-term protection from development and other uses under the Anadromous Fish Act at AS 16.05.871 and FRPA statutory and regulatory authorities. Information on fish passage barriers will support future restoration actions.
