Description    


This project constructed 86,686 feet of upland terraces, 61 sediment control basins (WASCBs), and implemented 518.4 acres of residue and tillage management. Terraces and WASCBs were constructed on unprotected cropland slopes to reduce soil erosion from overland flow and prevent it from entering surface water in the watershed. These erosion control structures were implemented at 10 worksites (20130074, 20130076, 20130077, 20130078, 20130079, 20130080, 20130081, 20130083, 20130086, 20130087). Direct seed practices were implemented at two Worksites (20130084 and 20130085) where conventional crop production was previously used. SWCD technicians used the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE2) and watershed hydrologic analysis to determine the location for the erosion control structures. NRCS guidelines were followed at all of the worksites.

Project Benefit    


The erosion control project will reduce sediment load and peak flows on streams and rivers in the Sherman Co. Area Watersheds. Erosion caused by unprotected cropland slopes is a major contributor to water quality impairment and soil production loss. Combined with low summer stream flows and lack of riparian vegetation, these factors may be responsible for high summer water termperatures, affecting our fish populations.
