Description

The Joliff Dam Removal project is located at river mile 10 of East Birch Creek. East Birch Creek is listed as crucial salmonid rearing grounds and is a tributary to the Umatilla River. Partners include the Umatilla Basin Watershed Council, Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife and Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board. This project removed a five and a half foot tall, abondoned, irrigation diversion dam, reshaped 1,000 feet of channel, installed four cross-vanes and six J-hooks and installed riparian vegetation. OWEB funds were requested for 1.9% pre-implementation, 84.39% contracted services, 4.15% in-house personnel, .35% travel, .13% post-implementation status reporting, and 9.08% fiscal administration.

Project Benefit

Obstructions are listed as a limiting factor to ESA listed steekhead in the Birch Creek Watershed. By removing the dam an additional 21 miles of East Birch Creek will be accessible.
